ANDALUSIA, ALA. –PowerSouth’s Central Generation employees proved their awareness and dedication to safety by completing a full year without a lost-time injury, meaning no plant employee missed work due to an injury suffered on the job.

Approximately 139,494 safe hours were worked by the plant’s 61full-time employees over the past year. Their hard work was recognized March 15 with a luncheon at the plant.

Achieving a year with no lost-time accidents illustrates the enormous degree of safety dedication practiced at the plant. Attention to safety is imperative for plant employees due to the nature of their work and the hazards they face each day.

“Our employees are very intelligent and highly skilled,” said David Wyatt, Central Generation Plant Manager. “Safety is a top priority at this plant and a year without a lost time accident is proof of everyone’s dedication to this objective.”

“Today is a good day here at Central Generation because not only are you celebrating a full calendar year without a lost time accident you are also celebrating one year without a lost time accident,” said Gary Smith, PowerSouth President and CEO. “PowerSouth’s safety program is all about you and I encourage you to approach every job you do here at the plant with safety being number one. You have accomplished a tremendous milestone.”

Central Generation’s safety team implements a comprehensive plan to achieve high safety standards, including monthly safety meetings for every employee, routine daily walk-throughs to ensure a safe work environment, and effective employee safety guidelines and procedures.

“Our safety program is not about the insurance discounts, it’s all about providing you the tools and training needed in order for you to do each job in a safe manner,” said Damon Morgan, PowerSouth Vice President of Power Supply. “No job is important enough to bypass safety practices.”

Robert Jernigan, Senior Consultant with Liberty Mutual, PowerSouth’s workers’ compensation, auto and general liability insurance provider, was also on site to present the employees with a plaque recognizing the employees’ safety record at Central Generation.

“I commend you for going above and beyond the industry standard by achieving a full calendar year without a lost time accident,” said Jernigan. “That is a tremendous accomplishment in your industry.”

Central Generation is composed of the Vann and McWilliams combined cycle plants. Together, they serve as one of PowerSouth’s primary generating resources, with a combined capacity of 698 megawatts.
