ANDALUSIA, ALA.– Andalusia High School (AHS) students Jonathan Bryant and Jodie Watson have been selected as PowerSouth’s 2014 Youth Tour winner and runner-up, respectively.

In March, the students will join hundreds of other Youth Tour winners from across Alabama in the state capitol to learn more about government, the legislative process and the rural electrification program.

As the AHS Youth Tour winner, Bryant will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., in June to participate in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s (NRECA) Youth Tour with more than 1,500 students from all across America to watch history come alive in our nation’s capital as they explore museums, memorials and monuments. Bryant will also have the opportunity to meet with his U.S. Representatives. As the winner, Bryant will become part of a group that has more than 50,000 alumni in every walk of life including U.S. Senators and CEOs.

The top 10 students from AHS will join area Youth Tour Program participants at Point A Lodge on Feb.19 to learn more about PowerSouth and the electric industry, while interacting with their peers.

Bryant and Watson were chosen based on their performance on written essays, written tests and an interview competition at PowerSouth’s headquarters in Andalusia.

Bryant was selected as the AHS winner. He exhibits his leadership by participating in the Key Club, Peer Helpers, Spanish Club, FOCUS and Memolusia Staff. He volunteers for Meredith’s Miracles, Key Club, Eagle Scout projects, Habitat for Humanity and Vacation Bible School.

Watson was selected as the AHS runner-up. She exhibits her leadership skills through participation in the Student Leadership Team at AHS, Anchor Club, Youth Church Band, Key Club, Peer Helpers, SGA, AHS Marching Band and Diamond Dolls. She volunteers her time with Vacation Bible School, Meredith’s Miracles, Dream Park renovation, AHS clean-up day and mission work.

Sarah Atkinson, Carson Posey and Caitlyn Wiley were selected as alternates.

PowerSouth has participated in the Youth Tour program for more than 20 years, sponsoring students from Andalusia, Elba, Opp and PikeCountyhigh schools.

The Electric Cooperative Youth Tour has brought high school students to Washington, D.C., every June since the late 1950s, and more than 50,000 students from across America have participated in this unique program.
